The rules below are based on those found in the AS/NZS 2918:2001 installation code. Please
carefullyfollowtheseinstallationinstructionrules,orthoseenforcedwhereyoulive.
Maximumoveralllengthofstraightfluesystem:notlessthan4.6mabovethetopofthe floor
protector.
Theflueshould beasshortanddirectaspossiblebetweenthewoodfireandfluesystem.The
use of two 45 degree elbows is often preferable to a single 90 degree elbow because less
turbulenceiscreatedintheexhaustflowandtheyresultinlesshorizontalrun.
Fluemustbeatleast24gaugeinthickness.
Fluejointsshouldoverlap30mm.
Eachjointinthefluemustbefastenedwithatleastthreescrews.
Thefluemusthaveallowanceforexpansion:elbowsinassembliesallowforexpansion;straight
assemblies should include an inspection wrap with one end unfastened, or a telescopic
section.
Theremust be provisionforcleaning of the flue,either througha cleanout orbyremovalof
theflue.Removaloftheflueshouldnotrequirethatthewoodfirebemoved.
Themaleendsofthesectionsmustbeorientedtowardstheappliancesothatfallingdustand
condensationstayinsidethewoodfire.
Afluemustnever pass through a combustible floor or ceilingorthroughanattic,roofspace,
closetorconcealedspace.
Where passage through a wall or partition of combustible construction is desired, the
installationshallconformtoAS/NZS2918:2001.
Theidealflueisonethatrisesstraightupfromtheappliancefluecollaranddirectlyintotheflue
systemwithnoelbows.A straight up flueneedseitheratelescopiclength or an inspectionwrap
(fluecoupler)toallowittobeassembledanddisassembledwithoutmovingthewoodfire.
A straight flue offers the least restriction to gas flow and results in stronger draft. Straight
assembliesalsoneedlessmaintenancebecausetherearenocornerstocollectcreosote.
Theflue
mustbeingoodcondition.
